NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / April 8, 2022 /The past few years have been nothing short of trying times for the restaurant industry. Even so, it is exciting to see young and talented entrepreneurs stepping up to provide unique dining experiences for local restaurant-goers that have long desired something new. That is exactly what Matt and Marcus Dominguez are doing alongside Alexander Dillon at Olar Noso. Olar Noso is the areas newest establishment generating a significant buzz among locals and loyal patrons eagerly awaiting the rebirth of a long-time favorite destination. Olar provides a lively atmosphere not often available outside the city, it's quickly emerging as the sophisticated but comfortable restaurant our area needed.

The name Olar Noso comes from a northern Spanish dialect meaning "our home", it's a true family-owned restaurant founded by the Dominguez brothers and backed by childhood friend Alexander Dillon. Matt Dominguez has more than ten years of restaurant experience working alongside his father, Miguel, at the wildly famous Olar location in Piermont. Since the pandemic, northern New Jersey has undergone somewhat of a suburban renaissance, the influx of young New Yorkers to the Bergen County area provides for the perfect opportunity to bring a restaurant like Olar Noso to life.

Olar Noso Features a Casual Upscale Menu

At Olar Noso, it's all about the food! The official description is "Mediterranean cuisine" but our best characterization is a fusion of Spanish and Italian flare. Patrons can enjoy delicious, gourmet pizzas that can be paired beautifully with traditional Spanish dishes, such as paella. The menu is expanded nightly with additional offerings of chef specials including some delicious twists on traditional tapas recipes. Olar also offers a fun bar scene on weekends, with specialty cocktails and a wine list procured by the owners and expert sommeliers. The team, now known as 3D Hospitality, has aspirations of being named one of New Jersey's few Michelin-star restaurants.

In brief

Location: 235 Pegasus Ave., Northvale Serving: New Jersey, New York and beyond Key members: Kevin Lee, chair of board and president; Eric Kang, vice president; Sam Lee, treasurer; Jimmy Song, board member; Anna Lee, executive director

Origin

Since 2015, Give Chances has changed its mission and target population to children of low-income communities in New Jersey, whereas, previously, we served children in Honduras. In 2016, Give Chances started an after-school program for children from low-income immigrant families in Palisades Park. In 2019, Give Chances opened another after-school program in Hackenack. However, in 2020, due to the pandemic, all learning centers have been closed and switched to virtual learning. This helped us to reach more low-income students in different towns and even different states.

Mission

Give Chances’ mission and vision is to create and provide opportunities for children, youth and people with disabilities who do not have access to quality education and/or timely care due to limited resources.

Goals

Our goals long-term are to spread our services nationwide to reach more people in need. Our overall goal is to close the education and learning gap and reduce inequality for families of low-income. Our goals include providing education, services and programs for healthy development and education that sets children up for success. Long-term, we are looking to increase the number of learning centers for our learning programs in order to support students on a larger range.

Programs

The main programs we currently have are our Children Education Programs, Youth Mentoring & Development Programs, and Disability Support. Children Education Programs provides quality education programs to children in communities with limited economic resources and support them to achieve their potentials and discover their talents. The Youth Mentoring & Development Programs support the visions and dreams of the youth. Our Disability Support program aims to support people with disabilities with career development, and encourage businesses and employers to hire people with disabilities.

Achievements

Some of our key achievements in the past year include an increase in the number of students and volunteers. We have recently opened our programs to students and volunteers from all states due to everything being online. We have been able to support more families with funds for rent, COVID support to stay safe, school supplies and materials, and other necessities.

Fundraising

Give Chances raises money through faithful donors who make contributions through monthly and one-time donations. We also receive a bulk of our funding through our applications for grants from the state and nationwide opportunities.

Benefactors

Our benefactors include corporations, small businesses, foundations, government entities and individual donors. Some top contributors include: iOttie Inc., PnP Line, DuoGreen, OFBI, NY Nanum Foundation, Bethany United Methodist Church and more.

Finally

We strive to provide quality education for all, and we kindly ask you to walk with us.

Hangry Joe's, a Nashville hot chicken franchise with locations in 12 states, recently opened a location in Northvale.

The franchise has been aggressively expanding in New Jersey, with another location in Florham Park and locations set to open in Closter, New Brunswick, Ridgewood and Trenton.

Nashville Hot Chicken is just what it sounds like: deep fried chicken covered in spicy hot paste served on white bread, preferably with a pickle.

"It is as appealing to the palette as it is to your eyes," Frank Cocuzza, who runs the Northvale franchise said. "It tastes as good as it looks. This takes fried chicken to the next level."

Cocuzza said he felt Bergen County was the perfect place to introduce this Southern speciality.

"New Jersey is known for its large and widespread food scene," Cocuzza said. "What better place than New Jersey, home to the toughest food critics? I know people will appreciate and enjoy it."

The chicken is designed to accommodate those who can't handle spicy food to those who can't enjoy anything unless there's a five-alarm fire in their mouth. Customers can order their chicken ranging from no seasoning and no heat to angry hot. Customers who try angry hot are required to sign a waiver and the restaurant stresses the order is non-refundable.

"Hot is interpretive," Cocuzza said. "Some people can handle it. Even though it's exceptionally hot, it's still flavorful."

Cocuzza concedes he can't handle angry hot, but customers often come in and see if they are up to the challenge, often working their way from medium and going up. Not to worry, as water is always available.

So far, the biggest attraction at Hangry Joe's has been the classic chicken sando. Customers have also enjoyed the chicken and waffles, Cocuzza said.

Bernie Taupin, best known as Elton John’s longtime songwriting partner, will sign copies of his new memoir, “Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton & Me” (Hachette, 416 pp., $32.50), Sept. 13 at the Books & Greetings bookstore in Northvale (Bergen County).

For information, visit booksandgreetings.com.

According to promotional material for the book, which is scheduled to be published on Sept. 12:

From his childhood in the East Midlands of England whose imagination was sparked and forever informed by the distinctly American mythopoetics of country music and cowboy culture, to the glittering, star-studded fishbowl of ’70s and ’80s Beverly Hills, “Scattershot” is simultaneously a “Tom Jones”-like picaresque journey across a landscape of unforgettable characters, as well as a striking, first-hand account of a creative era like no other and one man’s experience at the core of it.

Taupin writes about encounters with famous musicians (John Lennon, Bob Marley, Frank Sinatra) and famous non-musicians (Graham Greene, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí). According to the promotional material, the cast of characters includes “scores of notable misfits, miscreants, eccentrics, and geniuses, known and unknown. Even if they’re not famous in their own right, they are stars on the page, and we discover how they inspired the indelible lyrics to songs such as ‘Tiny Dancer,’ ‘Candle in the Wind,’ ‘Bennie and The Jets,’ and so many more.”

In a promotional blurb for the book, Elton John raved, “This is the most glorious of books. I am besotted by the life I never knew he had.” And Pete Townshend said every page of the book “is a delight, a joy, a name-dropper fan’s delight. Divine. I couldn’t put it down.”

In addition to writing songs with Elton John, Taupin has written lyrics for songs recorded by artists such as Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Ringo Starr and Marianne Faithfull; recorded as a solo artist and a member of the band Farm Dogs; published a book of poetry; and displayed his visual art.

Visit scattershotbook.com for a list of all of Taupin’s United States book signings.

The wait is over.

After closing its doors in Piermont last January, Olar has reopened across the border, in Northvale, New Jersey.

The first day of business was Dec. 14.

For now, the restaurant, called Olar Noso, serves dinner only with limited reservations as owner Miguel Dominguez wants to ensure everything, from the restaurant's popular artisan Neapolitan-style pizzas to its service, is running smoothly.

One reason is that Dominguez has a lot more space to work with. In Piermont, he had an intimate 30-seat eatery with a brick dome oven taking up a bulk of the space; Olar Noso is an 80-plus seat dining room with the pizza oven front and center. There's also a separate cocktail lounge and a private dining room which will eventually be made into a wine cellar, bringing the total seat count at 230.
