Why should only adults go out to celebrate for 2024? Local bars in Hoboken have popular events. American Dream Mall's also got a party.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Some families prefer a cozy evening inside to celebrate New Year's Eve, but others want to head out — and two local bars are hosting three celebrations on Jan. 31 to accommodate them.

Hoboken's biergarten, Pilsener Haus, only has a few tickets left for its annual afternoon celebration for kids on that date. The celebration this year runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and includes a kids' band, face painter, a balloon artist, and more. There's a ball drop at the end.

"Welcome the New Year with joy and giggles!" says the ticketing site. "Countdown to Kid-Friendly Fun! Join us at our annual Kids NYE Party for a blast of excitement."

Presumably, the adults can file in later and take advantage of the outdoor and indoor picnic table-like seating and tasty menu.

They're located uptown at 1422 Grand St. Find out more and get tickets here.

Meanwhile, Northern Soul, a bar/restaurant at the other western corner of town — at 700 First St. — has seen popularity of their New Year's Eve celebration for kids grow so much that they're offering two of them this year.

"Due to overwhelming demand we are doing two shows this year, ticket link in bio," they wrote. "Live music and dancing with the always entertaining "Fuzzy Lemons." Balloon drop with sparkling apple juice toast. Face painting and balloon animals. Both shows are capped to keep things comfy so tickets will go fast!"

And if you want more to do that day, American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, is open. Nickelodeon Universe is hosting a "noon years eve" celebration for kids starting at 11 a.m.

"Join the mega-fun, interactive countdown to Noon on the Nickelodeon Universe Slime Stage with a one-time-only dance party featuring children and characters from SpongeBob SquarePants, Paw Patrol and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," they said. "Guests can then head out into the park and enjoy the record-breaking rides in the Western Hemisphere’s largest indoor theme park. It’s the perfect New Year’s Eve event for kids and kids at heart!"

The mall is located at American Dream, 1 American Dream Way in East Rutherford. Get more details here.

Hoboken's Mysterious Little Bar An Intimate Experience Near The Water

HOBOKEN, NJ — The mysteriously glowing fish and martini glass on 14th Street in Hoboken are just hints that something unique is inside — an intimate seafood restaurant and bar with small plates, tasty cocktails, and desserts.

Located at the north end of town, a mile from the train station but only two blocks from the waterfront promenade, Little Bar is as much an experience as it is a place to dine: the perfect venue to entertain foodie friends or a date. A menu of plates, seafood, cocktails, and wines caters to a unique mix of tastes.

Nova Scotia chef Seadon Shouse, who brought his cuisine to Halifax Restaurant at Hoboken's W Hotel, is the executive chef at Little Bar.

Seadon's recently released memoir and cookbook, "From the Hill by the Sea," talks about foraging and "cooking from theland with heart and soul," and he employs these principles to Little Bar.

A recent visit to the bar — which opened last month — provided an answer to the burning question: How does one turn a former poke joint into a restaurant with seating for groups of two to four, plus a bar?

They've found a way.

For The 'Gastro-Curious'

The menu consists of boards (cures, caviar, and conservas), and bites (dishes, vegetables, and desserts). The cures range from duck liver pate for $11 to Serrano ham, salami, and duck rillettes for $25.

Conservas include house made maple smoked salmon (a delight at $12), mussels in Escabeche ($18), cockles in brine, ($22), and more.

Bites start at $8: Olives, potato chips, sesame-thyme lavash with butter. The whipped ricotta with truffle honey plate was a sweet surprise ($14). For dessert, you can choose from vanilla panna cotta with plum jam and a chocolate pot.

The cocktails have unique names to go with their ingredients: "Sidecar? Take the Ferry Instead," "Martin Served Frank's Way, Joe's Way, My Way." Ingredients range from cognac to Solerno blood orange to cacao.

“The atmosphere [is] reminiscent of a European-style neighborhood restaurant and sophisticated small bar experience, with an irreverent and slightly decadent signature,” said the owner, Michael Barry. “We look forward to serving patrons with extraordinary drinks and food in this unique venue and new location.”

“The space is designed as an outpost of Halifax’s unique palette, yet focusing on preserved bites, a new kind of venue for an interesting evening out,” said Shouse.

He added, “Offerings include preserved seafood ranging from basic sardines to choices for the gastro-curious, like tuna belly or hand-picked cockles, all complemented by an array of hand-crafted cocktails and fine wines.”

“We plan to serve classics as well as new cocktails, with some surprises," said General Manager Weng Lee.

Visit Little Bar at 1401 Hudson St. and learn more about it here.

Hoboken Will Demolish, Rebuild Public Housing Projects Over 10 Years

HOBOKEN, NJ — The city of Hoboken voted last week to rehabilitate and replace 1,354 units of low-income and senior housing in the southwest part of town over 10 years.

The long-awaited modernization of the federally subsidized units, some of which go back to the 1940s, will allow the 2,500 current Hoboken Housing Authority residents to remain housed there, although some will be moved to other units in the neighborhood.

The City Council approved the 10-year plan at its meeting last Wednesday.

The six senior and low-income complexes will be replaced by structures ranging from six to 12 stories tall.

Some additional units of afforable and workforce housing will be added after the existing units are replaced.

The properties on 21 acres of western Hoboken were built between 1940 and 1979, the city said.

The improvements to the neighborhood will also, according to the city, "modernize the area’s stormwater and sewer infrastructure to reduce the impact of flooding" and include "transportation improvements to increase accessibility and circulation, a commercial corridor along Jackson Street, as well as community-focused amenities with recreation spaces including a new resiliency park along Marshall Street."

Some New Housing, After Existing Housing Is Replaced

The plan will include some new affordable and workforce housing.

The city said, "The phased approach will prioritize the rapid replacement of existing HHA units, while allowing for the development of new affordable and workforce housing units. Future redevelopment projects may include residential units for other income groups once HHA replacement unit requirements are satisfied."

The plan requires a minimum of 15 percent of those new units be affordable units, and 10 percent be workforce housing units for households with incomes ranging from 80 percent to 120 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI).

"The Hoboken Housing Authority Redevelopment Plan provides the roadmap to revitalize an aging HHA housing stock that will enhance the quality of life for our residents without permanently displacing a single person,” said Mayor Ravi Bhalla.

The Hoboken Housing Authority is overseen by the Hoboken Housing Authority Board of Commissioners and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“The adoption of the HHA Redevelopment Plan is an important and long-awaited milestone that will have a positive impact on the residents of the HHA and improve the quality of life in western Hoboken,” said 4th Ward Councilman Ruben Ramos. “Thank you to the Mayor, Administration, Director Recko, my colleagues on the Council and the HHA Commissioners for working together [and] thank you to the many HHA and citywide residents."

Hoboken Housing Authority Executive Director Marc Recko said, “A result of many hours of work by the City, HHA, and HHA residents has resulted in a plan that is a major step in assuring quality public and assisted housing far into Hoboken’s future for those that need it the most"

The HHA Redevelopment Plan was created with input gathered from the community through the HHA’s prior planning efforts, community and stakeholder meetings, and online surveys following the Hoboken City Council's designation of the HHA properties as an Area in Need of Redevelopment in November 2022
